College Hockey: Union wins National Championship

Union College pulled out a win in a high scoring affair Monday night against the University of Minnesota. It was the programs first title since the program had been established in 1919. The Dutchman had been flying under the radar all season as well as in the plysoffs but proved there just was worthy for a championship. So how did Union College do it?

When you look at the pure numbers this game would clearly go to Minnesota, with a school admittance of 51,000 compared to Unions of 2,200. This was Unions very 1st frozen for appearance when the Gophers made their 21st appearance, also Union only had 1 player drafted while the Gophers were playing with 14 NHL picks. Early in the game it looked like the gophers might pull away with it when Justin Kloos scored at 2:57 of the first period and following a Union goal Sam Warning of the gophers scored at 10:03 of period 1. And that's when Shayne Gostisbehere decided to prove why he is a main candidate for the Hobey Baker award. Gostisbehere was on the ice for all of Union goals and had an assist on 2 of the goals that Union scored in the final 3 minutes of the 1st period. Adam Wilcox did all he could for the maroon and gold as he made 41 saves compared to Unions netminder Collin Stevens with 36 saves. If both teams can get they're underclassmen back they will both be a threat next year, especially the Gophers who led the country in goals by freshman this year, but for now the #1 spot go's to the Union Dutchmen.
